What Is Follicular Unit Extraction?

Follicular unit extraction helps those suffering hair loss regain a full head of hair.

It is known as the “Gold Standard” of hair restoration. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), also called follicular transfer (FT), is one of two primary methods of obtaining follicular units, naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs, for hair transplantation. The other method is called strip harvesting.

Strip harvesting involves surgically removing a section of scalp, then suturing. From this excised section of scalp, hair follicles or grafts (including their bulbs) are separated from each other into units of one to four hairs by the technicians then inserted into tiny slits in the balding area. The follicles with a single hair are placed in the front, to give a natural hairline. The rest are placed behind.

With the Follicular Unit Extraction method there is no surgery and no need to excise a piece of scalp. The follicular units/grafts are removed with a 1.0 mm or smaller punch to make a small circular puncture and the follicular unit/graft is extracted from the scalp. The FUE method is much less invasive and allows for quicker healing time. The hair follicles are then placed into tiny punctures in the balding or thinning areas at the proper angles to match your natural hair growth patterns.

The NeoGraftTM Device ramps up the FUE process to a new level.

Using the NeoGraft Device, the hair follicles are removed with gentle pneumatic pressure, so there is less risk of damaging the follicle or driving the follicle further into the skin, as sometimes happens in traditional procedures, risking an abscess. The physician controls the pressure of the device set to each individual’s type of scalp. Some people have a very tight scalp, other’s a looser scalp. Also, some individual’s follicles are deeper and more firmly anchored than others.

The NeoGraft Device allows for variation in the angle of the hair follicle, so the physician is able to remove the follicle without cutting through the follicle. The pneumatic pressure used to insert the follicles into the slits is adjusted for the person’s skin type, taking into account the thickness of the scalp or tightness of the skin, which can vary.

The transplanted hair will remain visible for two or three weeks and then the new transplanted hair will fall out. The bulb of the hair remains dormant under the skin for six to twelve weeks. After that time a new hair will grow from the bulb. Significant hair will grow in by 4-6 months and full hair growth is visible by 9 to 12 months. People will tell you how great you look because the difference is significant.

It took a dedicated 10 years to bring NeoGraft to the market and there is a reason it is called “The Gold Standard” of hair restoration. The minimally invasive procedure requires no surgery, takes 50 percent less time than traditional methods, and most people are back to work the next day.

Dallas NeoGraft experts have placed over two million grafts using the patented NeoGraft system. In fact, other physicians trust the Dallas hair restoration team to perform their personal hair transplant procedures.

Regardless of who performs your hair restoration, always ask for credentials of the physician doing the hair transplant procedure. Ask how many procedures they have performed and request seeing a portfolio of before and after photos of their actual patients.
